Football transfer rumours: Juventus to sign Javier Mascherano from Barcelona?

Pogba this. Pogba that. Frankly the Mill is sick of hearing about Paul. If somebody could just wake us up when the deal is done, or indeed not done, that would be grand. Not least because then the domino effect will begin, and while Juventus will spend most of their new-found riches on Gonzalo Higuaín, the Serie A champions will also make a big song and dance about signingJavier Mascherano from Barcelona. They’ll have a Paul Pogba-shaped hole to fill, you see.
Barcelona’s manager Luis Enrique said last Thursday that talks with Mascherano over a new contract were ongoing but it is not impossible to see the Argentinian following Dani Alves to Turin, particularly as he is may not be a regular starter for the Catalan side this season, with Gerard Piqué expected to partner new signing Samuel Umtiti in central defence. If Juve’s bid for Mascherano fails, they’ll give Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko or Zenit’s Axel Witsel a go instead.
Barcelona like the cut of Kevin Gameiro’s jib and, according to reports in Spain, have agreed a fee with Sevilla for the striker who netted 29 times in 52 games last season in all competitions. Now the 29-year-old has to decide whether he wants to carry on being a thorn in the side of La Liga defences this season at the Pizjuán, or a back-up to MSN. The Mill’s money is on the latter, after Gameiro was left out of Sevilla’s friendly with SV Sandhausen on Sunday, and instead seen in the stands with the Sevilla sporting director, Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo aka Monchi.
David Moyes didn’t have a lot of good memories from the Manchester United hot seat, but one of them was giving a first ever start to Adnan Januzaj at the Stadium of Light in October 2013, with the then 18-year-old scoring two expertly-taken goals to help United comeback from 1-0 down to win 2-1. Now that he’s the new man in charge of Sunderland, you can guess what Moyes’s thinking is. A season-long loan beckons. If Moyes can’t pull that off, he’ll settle for Relegation’s Charles N’Zogbia, who couldn’t run a bath last season at Aston Villa on £63,000+, but has miraculously found some form while trying to earn a contract at Sunderland – N’Zogbia scored the winner against Rotherham on Saturday as a trialist.
Tottenham are looking to trim the fat from their squad, with Nabil Bentalebexpected to join Benfica on a season-long loan, whilst Swansea are having a whip-round for the £8m it would take to bring Alex Pritchard to Wales. He and Bentaleb are two of four first-team Spurs players that have been excluded from the pre-season tour of Australia.
Bournemouth have all-but-signed Liverpool’s full-back Brad Smith for £6m – with an announcement expected early this week – which could fund Jürgen Klopp’s slightly worrying obsession with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell. The 19-year-old has been offered a new contract by the Premier League winners, so Klopp will have to be quick.
